As a professional cake designer and decorator for well over a decade, artist and Executive Pastry Chef Elena Shumskaya is known for her pioneering innovations and clever artistic approach to the fine art of cakes. With particular attention to customers themes and vision, she is able to capture and create not only an outstanding tasting cake, but remarkably the finest quality edible art work as well. Chef Shumskaya is a Russian born artist and pastry chef with life long experience originally learned from an award winning chef–her mother. Soon after arriving in the United States in 1994, Elena was recruited to assist at the family owned and operated bakery and found herself designing and decorating cakes. Her true passion then further developed by learning from the old world bakers, hand-on experience and by studying English cake decorating from books she found at the local library. Her fervor for learning then lead her to the Scott Clark Woolley Academy of Cake Art and to Pam Archibald of The Australian Academy of Cake Decorating where she further honed her skills. From intriguing designs that are refreshingly clean and simple, to incredibly detailed and elaborate works of edible fine art, her focus has always been accentuated by the flavor profile. Taste always is her priority as is the rich tradition for chefs with European backgrounds. Elena began working as an independent cake designer and design-contractor for local bakeries and for exclusive caterers where she was introduced to and began working for a legend in pastry arts, Jacque Torres, at the famous Le Cirque and Le Cirque 2000 restaurants in the heart of downtown New York City. Her work has been repeatedly published in such periodicals as New Jersey Savvy Living, Brides Guide Magazine and Caterina Fashion Magazine of Moscow. Her client list reads like a Who’s Who journal and include the famed Waldorf Astoria, Trump National Golf Clubs, Baltusrol Golf Club and Sir Richard Branson’s Natirar among many others. Her work has received absolute rave reviews from the likes of Donald and Melania Trump, the editor in chief of Vogue Magazine - André Leon Talley and actress Bette Midler as well as countless others. Elena’s cakes have been requested and shipped all throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Elena’s Awards include Best Artistic Design Award and Best Taste Award, at “The Art of Cake” at the New Jersey cake designers competition in 2008, 2010, judged by Buddy Valastro, "The Cake Boss", cake designer & author Colette Peters, the infamous Silvia Weinstock and the Somerset Art Association, Bedminster NJ; Best of Show Award, Somerset Art Association, 35th Anniversary of SAA Art Show, Bedminster, New Jersey, 2006; Best of Show Award, Folklore Motives in the Modern Fashion, GAO VVC Russia's Main Exhibition in Moscow, 1993. As a cake designer, Elena’s specialties are exceptionally photorealistic Trompe L’oel (Fr: “deception of the eye”) style cakes, storytelling conversational center pieces and couture wedding cakes as an outlet for her love for fashion. Elena’s other passions in life include fine foods, sculpting, painting, photography and exploration travel planning. She enjoys art as a way to celebrate the variety and beauty of life.
